These herbs are in no particular order, but I had to put chamomile first on this herbs for anxiety list because it’s one of my favorites. I drink a cup of chamomile tea to wind down almost every night before bed. Studies have shown that chamomile tea increases glycine levels. Glycine’s an amino acid that’s known as a nerve relaxant and helps to reduce muscle spasms. These effects are what makes chamomile tea such a great tea to help calm your mind and relax. It’s a perfect tea for bed time. I wouldn’t recommend drinking a large cup because drinking liquids at night can have you running to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Just 6 or 8 ounces an hour before bed time should suffice.

Another herb that I use to help manage stress and anxiety is lavender. Like chamomile, I use lavender before bed because it helps to calm my mind and helps me get a good night’s sleep.
Lavender’s a popular aroma therapy oil which can be used in a variety of ways. You can put it in your bath, massage your temples with it, put a couple of drops on your pillow, or put a little of the oil under your nose and simply inhale it to experience its sedative effects. It’s very calming and effective at reducing anxiety.

Passionflower is another calming herb. Experts believe that it helps increase the chemical GABA. An increase in GABA has been shown to reduce depression. Additional benefits of passionflower are: reduces anxiety, reduces menopause symptoms like hot flashes, and promotes good sleep. 4. Lemon Balm
Lemon balm, also known as the Melissa herb, is an herb that’s easy to grow both indoors and outdoors. You can also combine it with other herbs like chamomile and valerian to help to reduce anxiety, promote feelings of well-being and get a good night’s sleep.
Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and you can use it as a spice for cooking. You can also inhale it in aromatherapy.

Valerian has a long history dating back to the 2nd century AD. Studies have shown that it can be effective for promoting sleep and reducing anxiety. Because valerian is a sleep aid, don’t use it with any other sleep aids you may be using.
Like passionflower, valerian increases the chemical GABA which has anti-anxiety properties. Valerian can be a very effective tool for stress management.

6. Vitamin D
Number 6 on our list isn’t an herb, but I had to include it because it’s natural and vital for our mental and physical health.
When you have a vitamin D deficiency, you’re at risk for depression and anxiety. Consider getting some regular sunshine or taking vitamin D supplements to boost your mood and relieve stress. Foods like fatty fish also contain vitamin D, but the best way to get your daily dose is through sunshine and supplements as previously stated. Skullcap is a medicinal herb used in Chinese medicine and by Native Americans for centuries. It’s a nerve tonic that can be used to reduce stress and nervous anxiety. For some, it can even bring instant relief. Like many of the other herbs for anxiety on this list, it can also help you get a good nights sleep. Some other benefits of skullcap: reduces headaches and inflammation.
